Individuals who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their initial meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Strict Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," they stated.

Inherited Challenge

The new Pope, who took the position in spring, has inherited this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an unprecedented meeting on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to work with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we want to end clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Seven members of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that revisions to canon law will facilitate the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they plan to present to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," they remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released church-ordered document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The document also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the Pope at the beginning of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," they stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
