Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
