Per data from Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have lost their lives while in custody beginning in October 2023. An advocacy organization located in Israel has reported that the actual figure is almost certainly considerably higher, due to many of disappeared individuals in Gaza.

Civilian Casualties

Confidential Israeli data shows that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in detention were civilians, per a related examination.

During May of 2024, a defense forces registry following all militants in Gaza, a registry of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, listed only 21 fatalities in detention. At that time, 65 Gazans from Gaza had perished in detention.

“As long as these measures continue to be enforced, all Palestinian detainees in confinement is at peril, even the healthy ones, even the youth who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Several casualties in confinement have been high profile, for instance a 50-year-old medical chief who lost his life in prison after four months in detention.

A detainee detained alongside the deceased stated that he was brought to the courtyard by correctional officers just prior to his demise, visibly injured and naked from the waist down. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who died in Israeli custody are unidentified. Detention administrators and armed services supplied analysts with the figure of deaths in detention, and limited additional information including the location where they perished, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Identification Challenges

Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily detainees from Gaza, analysts were unable to correlate the few details supplied by government bodies to a death documented by human rights groups, either through testimony from former inmates or accounts in the media.
